Liverpool’s interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alacantara is gathering pace with multiple reports of the Spaniard having agreed personal terms with the club. Multiple sources suggest that the only stumbling block now is price.
His manager has essentially admitted that Thiago will leave Bayern Munich this summer and it appears Liverpool are the only club he wants to go to, despite Man Utd being in contact with his agents.
These 2 tweets are from the best foreign journos around. Very reliable.
There have been reports that Liverpool may need to sell Gini Wijnaldum in order to raise funds to sign Thiago, on top of reports of serious interest from Barcelona.
Wijnaldum or Alacantara?
So what would suit Liverpool best, holding onto Gini or trading him in for Thiago? For me, I’d rather have Thiago for the following reasons.
- Gini has only one year left on his contract and has been delaying signing a new contract for a long time now.
- We have too many defensively minded midfield players and not enough midfield guile.
- Thiago has the guile we need in midfield and he is a better all round player.
- We have plenty of cover for the more defensive midfield positions in Henderson, Fabinho and Milner.
- It’s always a good idea to let a team evolve to keep things fresh.
The worry is, of course, that we may end up missing Wijnaldum when he’s gone, particularly in the big games. We do, though, need more competent attacking midfielders and, for me, attacks break down way too often via Wijnaldum.
Hoping this one goes through!
