Wijnaldum joined Liverpool FC in the summer of 2016 after an impressive season as an attacking midfielder at Newcastle United. He would finish as Newcastle’s top scorer in the 2015/2016 season scoring against Liverpool, Manchester United and 4 against Norwich during that campaign!
Jurgen Klopp immediately put Wijnaldum in Liverpool’s midfield but he would play a more defensive role at Liverpool and has since cemented a starting place, as a combative midfielder, in the side. He would go on to be the hero at Anfield in the 2018/2019 Champions League semi final against Barcelona, coming on as a sub and firing two past the Catalan giants and helping secure Liverpool’s place in the final where they would beat Spurs to lift the trophy, securing Gini’s first major honour for the Redmen.
