Liverpool’s Anfield Set for 61,000 capacity
Work on Liverpool’s new Anfield Road End Stand is planned to start in the Autumn of 2020 and be completed by the beginning of the 2022/2023 season. The Reds plan to add 7,038 seats according to reliable LFC website ThisIsAnfield.com. Add this to the current capacity of 54,074 and the finished Anfield would have a capacity of 61,112 bringing us almost up to the levels of Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and the Tottenham’s new Stadium, 60,704 and 62,214 respectively. Trailing really on Manchester United’s 74,879 which is due to be reduced somewhat to add safety features and disability facilities.
The main work will be completed during the summers of 2021 and 2022 to allow for minimal disruption to match days as was done with the recently built new Main Stand. Liverpool will continue to play most of their games at home with the possible exception of 2 or 3 games at the start of the 2022/2023 season being played elsewhere, or possibly a few early games being away from home as was done after the completion of the Main Stand.
Planning permission for all this will be submitted by the club later this year and is not expected to have too many hitches. So, all things being equal the Reds will be playing in front of a 61,112 strong crowd in 2 and a ½ years from now. Next up for redevelopment should be the Kop Stand, bringing us ever closer to Man Utd who will have to reduce the capacity of their stadium. Redeveloping the Kop could prove very difficult but where there’s a will there’s a way!
