On this day in 1993 Liverpool FC signed legendary Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough’s son, Nigel Clough, from the same club. Forest would lose two of their best players around that time with Roy Keane also moving, to Manchester United.
There was a lot of debate about who had signed the better player and, believe it or not, initially, it looked like Liverpool had secured the bigger talent. Clough, who cost £2m, kicked off his Liverpool career by scoring twice on his debut against Sheffield Wednesday.
Not long later Man Utd would show up at Anfield and take a 3-0 lead within 23 minutes! Liverpool looked dead and buried, but about a minute after the 3 nil restart the ball fell to Clough, centrally and about 30 yards out, he smashed the ball hard into the corner passed a flailing Peter Schemichael. A little more than ten minutes later Clough would score again to send Liverpool in at half time only one goal behind. Neil Ruddock headed home in the second half to secure our best 3-3 draw ever.. until AC Milan tried the taking a 3-0 lead against Liverpool trick. Istanbul, 2005.
In the end, however, Clough couldn’t quite make the grade at Anfield and would move on from The Reds having made only 44 appearances for the club. To Man City! Despite this, he is still a bit of a cult hero among Liverpool fans after that night at Anfield when Man Utd thought they were onto something.
