Liverpool FC On This Day February 2nd 1952 The Reds’ iconic Anfield stadium welcomed 61,905 fans to watch an FA Cup 4th round tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers. A record attendance for an LFC home game.Liverpool went on to win the game 2-1 and you’ll never guess who scored one of the goals. None other than legendary former Liverpool boss Bob Paisley!
The Scotsman was not only, by far, the best British manager in history, winning 6 league titles and 3 European Cups in 9 years, but also a pretty decent player who won the league title with Liverpool in 1947. Paisley became LFC captain in 1951, scoring one of his 10 goals in this game.
The current capacity of Anfield is around 54,000. This is set to increase with the completion of the Anfield Road end upgrade in 2023. The new capacity will be around 61,000 so Liverpool will come close to beating their record pretty soon. With proposals for safe standing and possible further stadium expansion the record is bound to go. Probably inthe next few years!Work is well underway on the refurbishment of the Anfield Road end. Around 7,000 extra seats will be added. This includes 5,200 general seats and 1800 seats with hospitality features. Hopefully making it at least somewhat easier to get a ticket! The new stand is designed to match in aesthetically with the rest of the ground, particularly with the main stand. As can be seen in the picture below from Liverpool’s official website
After completion of the Anfield Road end Liverpool will have the third largest stadium in England behind Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. And just ahead of Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. Next for refurbishment will most likely be the Kop Stand as it will be the oldest stand in the ground. It has also been traditionally, of course, the largest grandstand and the focal point of the stadium.
