Liverpool FC On This Day 10/06/2011

On June 10th 2011, Liverpool would sign a future captain, a future Champions League and Premier League winning captain. Jordan Henderson signed from Sunderland, his home town club, for around £16m. Henderson was signed by then Liverpool manager, and Liverpool legend, Kenny Dalglish.

Jordan was somewhat of an underwhelming signing, for some, at the time. But even back then he was an England international and one of the best young English midfielders coming through. Despite this, Henderson has always sparked debate amongst fans as to whether he was good enough or not. A lot of the time Henderson played a defensive role at the club, to work his socks off and to win the ball back – that was his main role, but he was also expected to attack and so some fans were always looking for another Steven Gerrard, which doesn’t exist.

I think when fully fit Henderson has grown into a superb player and Liverpool look a much better team with him in the side. He has grown in confidence, grown as a player and has turned into a real leader on Merseyside. He has led Liverpool to a Champions League win and a virtually guaranteed Premier League win – and there is more to come from him. He will go down as a legendary Liverpool player and captain. A great signing by King Kenny.
