Joe Gomez Second Best CB in the League

JOMEZ – BOSS

Liverpool FC have conceded just 8 goals in 35 games in the Premier League when Joe Gomez has played, he is a superb centre half and only Van Dijk comes close to him in the EPL.

A lot of football fans have the habit of forgetting about an injured player and eventually vastly underrating them when they have barely played, or haven’t played at all. I don’t know how they become bad players in the physio room.

So, lest we forget, before Joe gomez got injured last season he was nothing short of immense. Together with VVD they delivered countless clean sheets and ‘Rolls Royce’ Displays.

So he gets injured halfway through the season and Joel Matip discovers the form of his life during our march to the Champions League. By the time Gomez returns for a game or two and has the incident with Raheem Sterling most football fans have him down as average.

Average? Not a chance, he’s the best around outside Viril Van Dijk and here’s why!

PACE: The man has got pace to burn, possibly even faster than Van Dijk, this is absolutely essential in a modern pressing football team who play a high line. Gomez and VVD’s pace allows Klopp to leave them one on one with attackers, freeing up other players to join our attack. Compare him to someone like Maguire at Man Utd and it is night and day – Klopp simply couldn’t play our high pressing, high line game with a sluggish defender like the United man. Maguire cost 80 million and not a chance would I take him over Gomez.

CALM AND COLLECTED: Gomez has that aura of calm about him, he seems to be one of these guys that wouldn’t flinch if a lightening bolt struck the ground five feet away – you need this coolness in a modern defender as lunging in hard is just not going to cut it in today’s game, modern attackers will make a fool of you, and fast.

VIRGIL VAN DIJK: Who better to have playing alongside you to learn the ropes from? Big Virgil seems to make whoever plays next to him look like a worldie and it’s certain that Joe Gomez will be learning every day from him, he can also trust him, he can be confident that if he does make a mistake then he has the undisputed best centre half in the world around to help him make amends.

So who is Gomez’s competition as the second best CB in the league?

LAPORTE: He started off pretty well at Man City and quickly became flavour of the month, but he then kinda reverted to a very solid player, but I don’t think a world class one. It was only when he picked up the injury and Man City fell apart that all of a sudden he is the best thing since sliced bread again (the reverse of the Gomez situation!). Not for me, I’d rather have Jomez! And I fancy that theory to be proved right in time.

MAGUIRE: As mentioned earlier he is just too slow for a modern attack minded team. He’s a tough player and is a decent centre back but I think in a side playing a high line he is likely to be exposed by pacey front men, forcing his manager to play a different system. It’s a bit like playing with a big target man up front, they have their qualities but you have to play in a certain way to suit their strengths.

DAVID LUIZ: LOL.

THE REST: ROFLMFAO Etc etc..
