Community Shield: Match Preview, Team News and where to watch

Liverpool take on Arsenal today in the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium. The match will be live on BT Sport 1 at 4.30 pm.

Only 34 days after the end of last season the Reds travel to London today to take on last year’s FA Cup winners’ Arsenal. According to Jurgen Klopp, despite only 2 weeks of preseason Liverpool will be taking the game very seriously, “It’s not a friendly, it’s a proper match against Arsenal”. So we can expect a fairly strong lineup, perhaps full strength, at least to start the game.

Team News:

Liverpool will have significant absences today, mostly due to minor injuries. Henderson, Trent, Matip and the Ox all miss out, although Virgil Van Dijk will return after a cut near his eye in Liverpool’s last friendly.

Predicted Lineup

  • Becker
  • Williams
  • Gomez
  • VVD
  • Robertson
  • Wijnaldum
  • Fabinho
  • Kieta
  • Salah
  • Firmino
  • Mane

Despite Klopp’s assertions this is a friendly, even if an important one, so I wouldn’t be too upset if the Reds don’t go all out here. Liverpool have a habit of playing in a lower gear in games that, in honesty, are not overly important. See the FA Cup and the League Cup for evidence. This is not surprising for a side that constantly has to get itself up for huge Premier League and Champions League title defining games. So let’s get some match sharpness today. Entertain the fans and, hopefully, get the win!
